Ice 1
1989-1990
Photo sensitive emulsion, calico, lead, wax and oil paint
56 x 41 centimeters

Ice 1 had its origin in an experimental technique of photographically transferring an dot matrix image onto a piece of canvas treated with a light sensitive emulsion. The experiment was somewhat successful in delivering a low-tech, low contrast landscape background awaiting for some context which would turn out to be an isolated figure stranded in an icy world.

The image floats on a grid painted a contrasting dull yellow. This was intended as an ironic play on the lavish gold frames which were used in classic painting.
