Adie Newton, the singer of the 1980's English outfit Clock DVA, liked a pained expressionistic style of vocals. It was the impassioned yearning in his delivery of the lines, "I can see the opening ... I CAN SEE OPENING" that inspired this work.
The man in this collage, who makes a reprise in works such as Data and Observer, this time wonders what awaits him on the other side of the gap in the wall. The device of the slanting rain lines cutting across the composition is borrowed from classical Japanese woodcut artists such as Ando Hiroshige.
