Dust Storm
2005
Oil on canvas over panel
72 x 60 cms
The rundown Victorian building shrouded by a dust storm in the outback mining town of Broken Hill is barely legible under the mass of stencilled dots. This picture wasn't progressing well so forcing a resolution by overpainting wet on wet with a dot screen, seemed a good idea. This is the first work in this series that utilises the ambiguity of form and space created by unpredictable optical effects such as the moire interference patterns. It's a curious contradiction that the effect can be quite painterly despite the utterly mechanical nature of the technique.
