Most of the pictures in this series have a format of four by three which is a ratio conveniently close to that of the camera, hence virtually all the paintings were initially composed in the viewfinder. The square format becomes awkward in accommodating landscapes, which are naturally seen as horizontal. This painting started life in a more conventional format, but due to a compositional weakness, it was necessary to resort to excising the quarter of the painting with the offending component. This picture which was in trouble also received the same treatment as well as some vigorous overpainting.
