Screenprint title Paul Gauguin's Straw Hut

Paul Gauguin's Straw Hut

C. 1978
Screenprint 40 x 33 cms
Collection National Gallery of Australia

This print is about the cheesy cliche of the allure of the tropics. When I read that Paul Gauguin sometimes worked from cheap postcards I was delighted because it undermined the 'Gold Of Their Bodies' myth and it was a strikingly modern artistic procedure. Here we see a randy Paul Gauguin appearing among the low hanging fruit ready to pounce on a native girl. I vaguely recollect that he image of the girl was from a old magazine where ethnography was used as an excuse to look at bare breasts.
